Physical Description Standing at 5 foot 6 inches, Deryn is neither tall, nor short. She weighs roughly 134 pounds and has an athletic build. She has pale, peachy skin, reddish brown oval shaped eyes, and long greyish black hair. Her hair is generally kept down, about her face, hiding her very small ears, but occasionally, a job requires her to have it styled up.

Deryn has no tattoos or other marks. Her clothing style when not on a job is generally neutral colours and full coverage. When on a job, she dresses to suit the location she’ll be working in so as to better blend in. She generally tries to avoid scents, but sometimes likes smelling of Sweet Alyssum. She is soft spoken and mild mannered. Deryn is rarely loud, though can make her alto voice carry through a crowd when necessary.

In-depth Information

Personal History Deryn Charity Bardell was born in 118 Tralirs to Eugene Harcourt and Orpha Nettie Bardell. She has an older brother, Jothan Thaddeus Bardell. Unfortunately when Deryn was four, her parents were killed. Jothan, aged six, and Deryn were taken to an orphanage, but the horrible Headmistress was abusive. They attempted to stay out of the Headmistress’ view for a while, but somehow they would always find themselves on the receiving end of her ire. When Deryn was eight, they finally decided enough was enough and took to the streets.

At first, they stuck together, but eventually Jothan was pulled in one direction while Deryn felt the pull of the criminal world. When Deryn was twelve, she found herself alone on the streets, her brother having gone to live with some charitable family who took him in but refused to take in his younger sister. They wanted only boys. And so Jothan abandoned his sister for a warm place to sleep and food.

Angered by this abandonment, Deryn made a vow to have her revenge on her brother. She was taken in by a local thief, Quinby Bowles, after she attempted to pickpocket him, and taught the ways of petty theft. Pickpocketing, lock picking, sleight of hand. She was never particularly skilled at the lock picking, but she was adept at pickpocketing and sleight of hand.

When she was 17, Quinby vanished during a solo job and was later found dead. Though she had not been introduced to the Shadowshapers Guild, they knew about her. In short order, Deryn was taken in by another thief, Matilda Claringbold and brought into the guild. Though she was never officially given jobs, Deryn did accompany Matilda on a few of her smaller jobs. Most of her time was spent learning from the others in the guild so that one day she could go on to do her own jobs.

Now, at 21, the time is right for her to start striking out on her own. She has moved into a tiny, shabby, apartment of her own. Though, she’s not far from Matilda. And has begun doing small jobs for the guild.

Personality & Traits

General Overview Though she is a loner, Deryn does work well with people and respects most of her elders. She tends to be a bit bold, but does know when to be cautious. She works hard, though not in a way that is respected by general society. Her main goal in life is to rid the world of bad orphanages. Deryn does not want other children to go through the abuse she, Jothan, and the rest of the kids at her orphanage went through.

She is fond of soft fabrics, the smell of campfires, and the sound of coins jostling around in a full coinpurse.

Deryn is usually not one to hold a grudge, but finds it hard to let go of the Headmistress of the orphanage’s abuse and Jothan’s abandonment. There is a fire in her heart burning the flames of scorn and revenge for these two people.
